Floyd Oswald Obituary, Death – Floyd Eugene Oswald, 89, a lifelong farmer from Muscotah, Kansas, died at home on Thursday, June 29, 2023, surrounded by his family. Floyd Oswald was born in Horton, Kansas on February 24, 1934, to Oliver Henry and Alice (Wenger) Oswald. He graduated from Effingham’s ACCHS in 1952. Floyd married Alleta Frommer in the Coal Creek United Methodist Church on August 26, 1956. They celebrated 66 years of marriage together.
Floyd had a rich life and met many people along the way. From 1954 until 1963, he was a sergeant in the Kansas Army National Guard’s 130th Division at Horton, Kansas. Floyd worked for LFM Foundry, which is now Bradken, for seven years while also farming full-time. He was an active cattle and grain farmer, as well as a land steward. As a soil conservation contractor, he spent countless hours on his bulldozer installing rivers, terraces, and ponds around the county. Floyd was a huge fan of Farmall tractors. He spent many hours in his garden, sharing much of his harvest with Effingham’s senior people, friends, and neighbors.
For many years, he delighted in surprise the youngsters in the neighborhood while dressed as Santa Claus. He was treasurer on the Kapioma Township Board for 28 years. He was a member of Jackson Farmer’s Inc.’s board of directors for nine years. Floyd had always desired to be a county commissioner, and his ambition was granted in 2000 when he was elected as Atchison County Commissioner. He served two four-year terms in a row. Floyd enjoyed assisting people and would frequently volunteer wherever possible.
He was a member of the Larkinburg Christian Church and served on several church boards. He is survived by his wife, Alleta, of the home; his three children, Donna Oswald of Atchison, Gregg (Terri) Oswald of Muscotah, and Ronda (Ray) DeLay of Holton; six grandchildren; Rachel (Kyle) Haught, Jackson DeLay (fiancé Jessie Chastain), Paige DeLay, Michael Oswald, Ashlea (Jonathan) Fedler, and James Oswald; and one great-grandchild. Gary Bottorff, his brother-in-law, also survives him. His parents, older brother and sister-in-law Roger and Vivian Oswald, and younger sister Jessie Bottorff all died before him.
