Joseph Sampson Obituary, Death – Joseph Gene Sampson, affectionately known as “Joe” or “Pete,” peacefully passed away on Sunday, June 25, 2023, at the Clarinda Regional Medical Center in Clarinda, Iowa. He was 67 years old at the time of his passing. Joseph was born on October 16, 1955, in Atlantic, Iowa, to LeRoy and Edna (Thies) Sampson. He spent his childhood in Walnut, Iowa, and graduated from Walnut High School in 1973. Following his graduation, he served as a Military Police (MP) officer in the United States Army until 1976.

In 1977, Joseph began his career as a peace officer in Griswold, Iowa, eventually rising to the position of Chief of Police, a role he held for 16 years. On April 28, 1984, he married Margaret Hurd in Walnut, Iowa. In 1992, Joseph joined the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office as a deputy and was later elected as the Sheriff in 2008. He faithfully served three terms before retiring in 2020. Joseph was a proud 50-year member of the Walnut American Legion, valuing his dedication to service.

Outside of work, Joseph enjoyed various hobbies such as hunting, fishing, watching Western movies, solving puzzles, tinkering, and spending time outdoors. In his younger years, he actively participated in competitive firearms shooting. However, his most cherished pastime was being with his family, especially his granddaughter, Josie. Joseph took immense joy in attending her activities and supporting her in sporting events.

Joseph was preceded in death by his parents, LeRoy and Edna Sampson, as well as his siblings: Robert Sampson, John Sampson, James “Auggie” Sampson, Mary Willie, and Walt Sampson. He is survived by his loving wife of 39 years, Margaret Sampson of Elliot, IA, and their children: Sean Sampson and wife Mallory of Red Oak, IA; Ben Sampson and wife McKenna of Red Oak, IA; Will Sampson and wife Eva of Hyannis, NE; and Joey Sampson of Red Oak, IA. Additionally, Joseph is survived by his cherished granddaughter, Josie Sampson.

He is also survived by his siblings: Dave Sampson and wife Carol of Hancock, IA; Arnie Sampson and wife Carol of Pikeville, NC; Wayne Sampson of Underwood, IA; Susan Libby of Walnut, IA; and Martha Hargens and husband Randy of Walnut, IA. Joseph’s extended family includes sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, nieces, nephews, relatives, and countless friends who were touched by his presence.

A Mass to celebrate Joseph’s life will be held at 10 AM on Thursday, June 29, 2023, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Red Oak, Iowa, followed by his burial in the Layton Township Cemetery in Walnut, Iowa. A prayer service will take place at 5 PM on Wednesday, June 28, 2023, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, with visitation with the family to follow until 7 PM. Arrangements are being handled by Nelson-Boylan-LeRette Funeral Chapel in Red Oak, Iowa. During this time of mourning, the Sampson family appreciates all condolences and support extended to them.
